Long-tailed Duck (Clangula hyemalis), Casa Grande, Pinal County

Long-tailed Duck is a rare fall migrant and winter visitant to Arizona. This individual was found at Dave White Golf Course in Casa Grande, Pinal County by Tom Johnson et al on 28 December 2007. It shows one of the least-illustrated plumages of this species, that of the first winter or first cycle male. It can be identified as a male by the nearly white crown, long white scapulars, and the orange coloration of the bill. Adult males display the long tail feathers that the species is named for.
