Greater Scaup (Aythya marila), Saguro Lake, Butcher Jones Cove, Maricopa County

This female Greater Scaup was discovered and photographed by Michael Moore on 09 November 2008 at the Butcher Jones Cove of Saguaro Lake in a mixed flock containing Lesser Scaups, Ring-necked Ducks and Coots.

Considered a rare winter visitor in Maricopa County, although probably overlooked.

In comparison to nearby Lesser Scaups, note especially the shape of the head and the size of the bill.  Also note the bird has a slight suggestion of the whitish auriculars that are usually indicative of Greater Scaup as well.
