Eastern Phoebe (Sayornis phoebe), Patagonia Lake State Park, Santa Cruz County

This Eastern Phoebe was discovered on 12 October 2008 by Mark and Janet Scheel at Patagonia Lake and was photographed by Mark Scheel on 12 October 2008.

This species is a rare transient and winter visitor.  Historically, Patagonia Lake has been one of the most consistent places in the state to find this species in winter.

Distinguished from Wood-Pewees by lack of eyering, dark head contrasting with back and all dark bill.  Eastern Phoebes also constantly wag their tails down which Wood-Pewees do not do.
