Short-tailed Hawk (Buteo brachyurus), Shannon Campground, Mt Graham, Graham County

This Short-tailed Hawk was found and photographed by Ryan O'Donnell on 13 June 2019

Short-tailed Hawk has been expanding its range northward and is now rare but regular in southeast Arizona and it has bred. Many reports are likely returning birds.

Pale underparts including chin & throat and underwing linings. Dark brown crown & auriculars with white chin giving helmeted appearance. Whitish base to black tipped primaries. Secondaries progressively darker to broad black band at tips.
