Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium brasilianum), Altar Valley, Pima County

This Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl was photographed by Stuart Healy on 29 November 2018

Rare and local species in Arizona. Formerly an uncommon nesting species at the northern edge of its range in southern Arizona.  It has declined precipitously over the last several decades.  The species is however regularly found in certain locations in Pima County, but due to issues with birders disturbing this species locations are kept quiet. Because of its status, no specific location information is provided for this sighting.  AZFO strongly opposes playing tapes for this species outside of research purposes or disturbing it in any way.

Streaked crown and rufous banded tail separate it from the Northern Pygmy-Owl.
