Barrow's Goldeneye (Bucephala islandica), Lake Pleasant, Maricopa County

This Barrow's Goldeneye was found and photographed by Troy Corman on 31 December 2016

Very casual winter visitor in much of Arizona away from a few specific location on the Colorado River where they winter annually in small numbers. Potentially only the fourth record for Maricopa Co.

From similar Common Goldeneye, smaller and more triangular bill; bill of females are often nearly all yellow-orange in color as this bird is; and steeper forehead and longer mane give it a much different head shape. However, beware of hybrids.
