Broad-winged Hawk (Buteo platypterus), Bushnell Tanks, Sycamore Creek, Maricopa County

This Broad-winged Hawk was found and photographed by Tommy DeBardeleben on 14 May 2016

Rare but annual migrant in Arizona. In recent years, reports and documentation of this species have increased, especially in spring.

Small buteo, wings broad but fairly pointed with black trailing edge, tail fairly short and distinctly banded, similar size to Cooper's Hawk it was soaring with, mottled brown underparts.
