Plain-capped Starthroat (Heliomaster constantii), Ash Canyon, Cochise County

This Plain-capped Starthroat was photographed by Brandon K Percival on 24 July 2015. Starthroats are reported fairly regularly at this location during the summer, making it extremely difficult to track individuals.

Rare summer visitor to SE Arizona. Becoming more regular, annual since 2007. Most records of Plain-capped Starthroat in Arizona come from the numerous feeding stations at middle elevations in the southeast region of the state, and most have occurred from late June through September. Most birds have been in wing molt possibly following the rains north to molt; from this photo it is difficult to tell whether the wings are in active molt. Some reports may be of returning birds.

Large size, very large white malar and line behind the eye, white patch on flanks; very long bill.
