Short-tailed Hawk (Buteo brachyurus), Cienega Creek Preserve, Pima County

This Short-tailed Hawk was found and photographed by Paul Suchanek on 20 March 2015

Short-tailed Hawk has been expanding its range northward and increasing in Arizona for the last several years and it has bred. However most reports are from montane forest in the southern "sky islands".

White underparts, including throat.  Black trailing edge to wing, grayish secondaries and white base to the outer primaries.
