Evening Grosbeak (Coccothraustes vespertinus), Seven Springs Wash, Maricopa County

This Evening Grosbeak was found and photographed by Tim Marquardt on 06 January 2015

Found in conifer and spruce-fur forest of the higher mountains. It is a casual transient and winter visitor in lower elevations. Has decreased dramatically in Arizona as well as much of its of range over the last several decades, and there are few recent records for Maricopa County. This was a significant flight year for Evening Grosbeaks in Arizona.

A distinctive species, a gray finch with massive, cream colored bill, lime-yellow collar, black tail with white spots, black and white wings.
