White-eared Hummingbird (Hylocharis leucotis), South Mountain area of Phoenix, Maricopa County

This White-eared Hummingbird was found and photographed by Duane Morse on 13 December 2014 and photographed again by him on 16 December 2014

A rare primarily summer visitor to the south eastern portion of the state. This is apparently a first record for Maricopa County and only the third away from SE Arizona (one in Springerville Apache County in 2005 and one in Flagstaff Coconino County in 2010).

Young male. Broad white eye stripe over black auriculars, relatively short bill, green spotting on throat and upper breast separate this from the only possible confusion species, the female Broad-billed Hummingbird.
