Yellow-shafted Northern Flicker (Colaptes auratus auratus), Rotary Park, Lake Havasu City, Mohave County

This Yellow-shafted Northern Flicker was found and photographed by David Vander Pluym on 22 October 2014

Most of the Northern Flickers seen in Arizona that have yellower shafts are intergrades between the Red-shafted and Yellow-shafted forms. Pure Yellow-shafted Northern Flickers are rare in Arizona.

No outward signs of intergression with a brown face, gray crown, bright yellow in the wings and tail, and red nape patch. Intergrades usually have an intermediate face patterns with gray in the cheek and brown in the crown.
