Blue-throated Hummingbird (Lampornis clemenciae), Hassayampa River Preserve, Maricopa County

This Blue-throated Hummingbird was found and photographed by Melissa Oehler on 31 October 2014

This is a first Maricopa County record for Blue-throated Hummingbird. This bird is casual in central Arizona, but there have been a few other extralimital reports in Yavapai County.

Blue-throated Hummingbird is a very large and distinctive hummingbird. Key ID points include a medium-length bill, dark tail with large white corners, uniform grayish color below, green-backed with some bronze tones on the rump, and two white lines on face: one extending from the back of eye downward behind eye, and the other from the base of the bill down to the throat area.
