Red-necked Grebe (Podiceps grisegena), Lake Havasu, Mohave County

This Red-necked Grebe was discovered and photographed by Brad Singer on 08 November 2013.

Casual (though increasing) migrant and winter visitor.

Grebe larger than an Eared or Horned but smaller than a Western. Long bill nearly the length of the crown and similarly wide with yellow at the base of the lower mandible. The dingy white of the chin and rear cheek does not contrast sharply with the darker ear coverts suggesting an immature bird. Light gray foreneck blending to darkish gray hindneck.
