Reddish Egret (Egretta rufescens), Gilbert, Power Road and Guadalupe Road, Maricopa County

This Reddish Egret was discovered by Lindsay Story on 02 September 2012 and photographed by Richard Ditch and Bernie Howe on 03 September 2012.  It carries a leg band which confirms that this juvenile Reddish Egret was banded in Isla Alcatraz, Bahia Kino, Sonora, Mexico on 11 June 2012.

Reddish Egret is a casual mid-summer to fall wanderer to southeast Arizona. Has become more regular in the past 15 years to the point that the Arizona Bird Committee removed it from the Review List.  It is now on  the Sketch Details list.

Uniform blue-gray heron with reddish highlights, dark gray legs and dark, long heavy bill identify this as an immature Reddish Egret.  As with all occurences of this species in Arizona, this is a dark morph immature.
