Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius), Madera Canyon, Pima County

This Yellow-bellied Sapsucker was found and photographed by Laurens Halsey on 26 October 2012 near the bridge between the Whitehouse Picnic Area loop and the trail leading to the Proctor loop.

Rare but regular winter visitor.

Still in partial juvenile plumage - the mostly red crown is peppered with brown juvenile feathers, Red-naped Sapsuckers should be in full adult plumage this time of year. Black completely surrounds the red throat patch and lack of any red on the nape.
