Surf Scoter (Melanitta perspicillata), Bill Williams River delta, La Paz County

This Surf Scoter was discovered by John West and photographed by David Vander Pluym on 13 November 2011

1 of up to 3 Surf Scoters present at this location since Nov 9.

The most regular of the three species of scoters in Arizona. Has been annual in late fall and early winter in the LCRV

Dark brown, heavy set duck indicates female or immature scoter. White spots on side of head combined with pattern of feathering on the bill indicate Surf Scoter.
