Short-billed Dowitcher (Limnodromus griseus), Glendale Recharge Ponds, Maricopa County

This juvenile Short-billed Dowitcher was discovered by Melanie Herring and Tommy DeBardeleben on 10 October 2011 at the Glendale Recharge Ponds, where it was photographed by Tommy DeBardeleben.

Rare transient throughout Arizona, where fall migration offers the best chances of observing this species. They pass through from mid-August to mid-October. This year has been an exceptional year overall in Arizona for this species.

Juvenile bird. A lot of white on the tail, very brightly colored on the back, with bright rufous-buff or "tiger-striped tertails" which is distinctive for juvenile Short-billed Dowitcher.
