Least Grebe (Tachybaptus dominicus), Peņa Blanca Lake, Santa Cruz County

These Least Grebes were photographed by Alan Schmierer on 14 May 2011.  These photos provide breeding evidence for this long staying pair for the second year in a row at this location.

A pair of Least Grebes were reported at this location during the summer and nest building was reported.  These photographs further document the breeding of this species at this location.  Monson and Phillips (1981) indicate two possible previous breeding records: Mittry Lake in 1951 and west of the Tumacacori Mountains in 1964.  However, the only evidence of breeding they cite is a large number of individuals present (15 and 7 respectively) with no further details.  Therefore, Least Grebes may have previously bred in the state, but this pair is the only well substantiated breeding record.

Tiny gray grebe with black face, yellow eyes and small, black bill.

Carrying food in the first photo.  Adult with young in the second photo.
