Horned Grebe (Podiceps auritus), Kokopelli Golf Course, Maricopa County

This Horned Grebe found by Marceline VandeWater on 15 January 2011 during the Phoenix Aquatic Bird Survey. It was photographed by Pierre Deviche on 27 March 2011 and Bryan Holliday on 29 March 2011.

Rare, but fairly regular, migrant and winter visitor.

Smallish grebe (molting from basic to alternate plumage) with flat crown, pale bill tip, and some pale rufous on neck - these characters differentiate from Eared Grebe (one of which also on same pond at same time).
