Northern flicker hybrid (Latin Name), Santa Gertrudis Lane , Santa Cruz County

This Northern flicker hybrid or intergrade was photographed by Thomas Martin on 11 March 2010.

This male Flicker gets it red nape spot from a Yellow-shafted Northern Flicker parent and its red malar stripe from either a Red-shafted Northern Flicker or a Gilded Flicker parent.  The one primary shaft visible appears orange and this suggests Red-shafted as the other parent.  Such intergrade Northern Flickers are rare but regular in Arizona.
