Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus), Pintail Slough, Havasu NWR, Mohave County

This Red-shouldered Hawk was photographed by Troy Corman on 04 February 2010

Rare, but apparently increasing visitor, particularly in the fall and winter. Most individuals arriving in Arizona are likely from expanding populations in California.

Immature individual: note dark throat, streaked breast, and barred belly and flanks. In flight, the secondaries and primaries have a checkered pattern and the characteristic pale crescent-shaped panel at the base of the primaries is quite evident. The nape and shoulder region are solid brown with a slight rusty tint.
