White-winged Scoter (Melanitta fusca), Kearny Lake, Pinal County

This White-winged Scoter was discovered by Phil Norton on 2 January 2009 at Kearny Lake.  It was photographed by Brendon Grice on 03 January 2009.

In the 1990's White-winged Scoter was almost annual in Arizona, but reports declined after that.  However, there have been several reports in the last couple of years, so perhaps they are increasing again.

These photos clearly show the feathering extending well out on to the sides of the bill and the white secondaries which are diagnostic for this species.
