Least Tern (Sternula antillarum), Gilbert Water Ranch, Maricopa County

This Least Tern was first discovered by Rich Ditch on 20 May 2009 and photographed by Pierre Deviche on the same day.

This species is nearly annual in mid May at two locations in the state, Willcox and Gilbert Water Ranch.  Away from these sites it is extremely rare.  Two Least Terns were present at Gilbert on 8 May 2009 but have not been seen since, so most likely this is a different bird.  It's appearance was associated with unsettled weather.
