Lucifer Hummingbird (Calothorax lucifer), George Walker House, Paradise, Cochise County

Joe LaFleur discovered this male Lucifer Hummingbird coming to the feeders at the George Walker House in Paradise on 02 June 2008.  It was photographed by Robert Shantz on 08 June 2008.

Lucifer Hummingbird is a rare to casual summer visitor to the mountains of Southeastern Arizona.  Recently, it has been easiest to find in the Huachucas in Ash Canyon but is casual elsewhere.  This is only the second sighting of Lucifer at the George Walker House.

Note the long purple gorget, decurved bill and long tail.

Lucifer Hummingbird is and ABC Sketch Details species.  Submitting photos to AZFO does not constitute reporting a rare bird for consideration as an official record. To ensure that a record becomes official, details or photos of Sketch Details Species should be sent to the Editors of North American Birds and a full report of Review Species should be submitted to the Arizona Bird Committee. Most rare birds are under _documented and subsequent observers of a rarity are always encouraged to submit reports and additional photos, especially for birds that are challenging to identify.
