Hybrid Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) x Northern Pintail (A. acuta), Baseline Pond, Cibola, La Paz County

This apparent hybrid Mallard x Northern Pintail was found and photographed by David Vander Pluym on 02 February 2015

Rare, but somewhat regularly reported hybrid combination. Females are less frequently reported and more difficult to identify.

Similar to a female Northern Pintail but note the slightly bolder face pattern, yellowish legs, greenish-blue speculum, whiter underwing, and less elongated structure.
