Hybrid Red-breasted x Red-naped Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus ruber X S. nuchalis), 'Ahakhav Tribal Preserve, La Paz County

This Hybrid Red-breasted x Red-naped Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus ruber X S. nuchalis) was found and photographed by David Vander Pluym on 02 November 2014

Hybrids are likely annual in the state and have been recorded annually in the Lower Colorado River Valley in recent years.

More extensive red on the head than a Red-naped as well as red extending down onto the breast. Less red on the breast than a pure Red-breasted Sapsucker as well as less red on the head than typical Red-breasted.
