Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl (Glaucidium brasilianum), Tubac, Santa Cruz County

This Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl was discovered and photographed by Chris Benesh on 13 January 2014

Rare species in Arizona and very unusual at this location. Formerly an uncommon nesting species at the northern edge of its range in southern Arizona.  It has declined precipitously over the last several decades.  Because of its status, this posting was intentionally delayed and no specific location information is provided for this sighting.  AZFO strongly opposes searching for this bird or disturbing it in any way in case it may be a young bird prospecting for a new breeding location.

Streaked crown and rufous banded tail separate it from the Northern Pygmy-Owl.
