Neotropic Cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus), Concho Lake, Apache County

These Neotropic Cormorants were photographed by Eric Hough on 24 August 2012

Since first being found in Arizona in 1961, Neotropic Cormorants have been expanding in the state with records mostly from southern and western Arizona, and recent breeding in the Phoenix area. In recent years birds have been found further north in the Prescott area and near Glen Canyon Dam. This appears to be the first observation of this species in the White Mountains region as well as in Apache County.

Arrows indicate Neotropic Cormorants.  These two birds were observed with a flock of 10 Double-crested Cormorants. They were smaller bodied, had dull yellow-ruddy coloration on the gular patch, had more narrow pointed posterior edge of the gular patch, and had dark supralorals (not the same color as the skin of the gular patch like Double-crested).
