Northern Cardinal x Pyrrhuloxia hybrid (Cardinalis cardinalis X C. sinuatus), near Morgan City Wash confluence with Agua Fria River bed, Maricopa County

This Northern Cardinal x Pyrrhuloxia hybrid was photographed by Troy Corman on 07 April 2012

Given their extensive range overlap in southern AZ, there are surprisingly few documented records of this hybrid combination, although this is the second one documented to the AZFO pages.

Note intermediate plumage and bill shape in this individual. Grayish rump, back, nape, and flanks; reduced amounts of black around bill; crest smooth, thinner and less bushy than typical N. Cardinal. Bill has some yellow tint to it, plus it is more rounded tipped as in Pyrrhuloxia.
