Surf Scoter (Melanitta perspicillata), Patagonia Lake, Santa Cruz County

This Surf Scoter was discovered by Stuart Healy and photographed by Alan Schmierer on 22 November 2011

A rare but regular late fall migrant with passage peaking in November.

Dark brown, heavy set duck indicates female or immature scoter. White spots on side of head combined with pattern of feathering on the bill indicate Surf Scoter.
