Tricolored Heron (Egretta tricolor), Lakeside Park, Tucson, Pima County

This immature Tricolored Heron was found by David West at Lakeside Park in Tucson on 22 September 2010 and was photographed there by Dave Stejskal later the same day.

Tricolored Heron is a casual to rare visitor to s. Arizona from late spring to early fall with more than sixty records for the state overall. The likely origin of these records is from coastal populations in n.w. Mexico dispersing after the breeding season.

There are no other North American herons with dark upperparts, a white belly, and white underwing coverts.
